The existing contract with Mr. Mark Gibbard to provide
a sufficient number of horses and drivers to collect from every
house in the Borough at least once in every week works most
satisfactorily, very few complaints have been received in respect
of non-collection.
It will be noticed that there is a decrease of 189 loads for
the year. I think this is largely attributable to the increasing
use of Gas Stoves for domestic purposes.
The whole of the refuse has been deposited at the Council's
Destructor, where it is used for generating steam for pumping
purposes in connection with the Sewage Works.
135 Notices have been served upon responsible persons to
furnish houses with suitable galvanised iron dustbins, and
have been complied with, but it is to be regretted that the
bins are manufactured of such poor material that their life
is very short, necessitating going through the work again.
Landlords frequently complain that the bins are damaged
by the Dustmen while collecting, but if a trifle more was paid
for the bins in the first instance it would be more economical.
