The majority of the owners and occupiers of these premises carry
out the work of limewashing, but in some instances it has been
necessary to serve Notices for cleansing.
Schools.—The Public and Private Schools have been
regularly inspected, and have generally been found in a cleanly and
satisfactory condition, the drains, manholes and gullies of the
public elementary schools have been systematically cleansed and
disinfected by the Council's men, the urinals, lavatories and
sanitary appliances being attended to by the Caretakers.
Disinfectants.—There are three distributing stations in the
Borough for issuing disinfectants—Central Station (Town Hall
Depot), the Northern Station at the Church Road Depot and the
Southern Station at Cyprus. It is a great convenience to the
public who require disinfectants in consequence of having infectious
disease in the house to be able to obtain it from these
stations. They are open every morning from g to 11 and in the
afternoon from 2 till 3.
Some 36 tons of powder and 1940 gallons of fluid have been
given to Ratepayers ; the greater part of the Carbolic Powder has
been used in connection with disinfecting Dust-bins.
Collection of House Refuse.—During the year under review,
13,656 loads of refuse have been collected, as compared with
13,380 for the previous year. The disparity in these figures would
be greater but for the fact that two carts have been displaced by
two vans.
The whole of the refuse has been conveyed to the destructor,
where it is used as fuel for generating steam utilized in connection
with the Sewage Works.
210 Notices have been served upon responsible persons to
furnish houses with suitable galvanised iron dust bins.
160 were complied with, but in 50 cases the Council
supplied the bins and the Borough Treasurer recovered the cost
under the powers contained in the East Ham Improvement Act,
1903. The following table gives the number of loads of refuse
collected during the year:—
