MORTUARIES.
During the year 5 bodies were received at the Mortuary at
North Woolwich, and 100 at the Wakefield Street Mortuary.
The latter building is inadequate, and the accommodation unsatisfactory
for dealing with the large number of bodies now annually
brought there.
A new and suitably equipped building is badly needed, both
for the proper reception of bodies and for the convenience of those
having to perform the unpleasant duties that are necessary.
SEWAGE WORKS.
The additions to the Sewage Disposal Plant, mentioned in last
year's Report, have given every satisfaction, and are working
well.
During the year a Bacterial Filter Bed has been formed,
composed of clinker from the Refuse Destructor. When completed,
this will be about an acre in extent, at present a third of
it is finished and in working order. The effluent from the tanks
is distributed over the filter bed, and is being much improved in
character by this additional treatment.
The Works continue to be conducted in a cleanly and satisfactory
manner, though the practice of disposing of the sludge
from the precipitation tanks, by enclosing it in lagoons, built up
of house refuse, is not altogether a satisfactory method, from the
point of view of public health, though it has the merit of economy.
REFUSE DESTRUCTOR.
This apparatus continues to do its work in a satisfactory
manner. In addition to burning the house refuse, diseased
animals, such as Glandered horses, pigs dying of Swine
Fever, together with all the stray dogs killed in the lethal
chamber, are cremated in the combustion chamber of the
Destructor. The following table give a list of the carcases so
destroyed during the year:—
6 Horses and Mules
28 Pigs
938 Dogs
