CORRECTED DEATH RATE.
The mortality amongst old people and young children being
higher than amongst adults, and being also higher among males
than females, and as the proportion of these varies in different
districts, it is obvious that before any accurate comparison can be
made between different towns, correction must be made for these
factors.
The Registrar General gives a "factor for correction" for
the age and sex distribution in each of the 76 Great Towns. For
East Ham this factor is 1.0665. The nett death rate multiplied
by this factor gives the corrected death rate, which is therefore
11.73 Per 1,000 of population.
It is this figure which should be used in making comparison
with other towns, the death rate in such towns having been
similarly corrected.
