mid-night inspection was made, and it was proved that the Notice
had not been complied with, for 18 persons were discovered on the
premises, seven being in one room.
The Owner was summoned and convicted for not complying
with the Council's Notice.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
1256 notifications of Infectious Diseases were received, and
particulars entered in the " Infectious Diseases Register."
Upon receipt of the notification, the premises were immediately
visited and directions given as to isolation, and a printed list of
precautions handed to the responsible person of the house, setting
forth the usual rules to be observed to prevent the spread of
disease.
The premises were inspected for sanitary defects, and drains
tested. Where any defects were found to exist, a Notice was
served upon the responsible person, and the work carried out under
the supervision of the Department.
A full inquiry was made as to the probable origin of the
disease, where possible the history traced, and a detailed report
written and presented to the Medical Officer of Health.
A postcard was left for the patient's Medical Attendant to sign
and forward to the office, at the termination of the illness. On
receipt of this postcard, the Disinfector at once proceeded to the
premises for the purpose of fumigating them.
The Head Teachers of Day Schools, Superintendents of
Sunday Schools, and the Librarian of the Public Libraries were
daily advised of all cases of infectious disease ; they were further
informed when the houses were disinfected.
During the past year some 1475 School letters have been
forwarded by the Department.
