POPULATION AND GROWTH OF DISTRICT.
According to the returns of the Registrar General, the
population at the Census (1st April, 1901) was 96,018, which comprised
47,843 males and 48,175 females.
The estimated population at the middle of 1904 was 116,902,
and for the purposes of this Report, this estimate is the basis of
calculation.
In the first week of January, 1905, the work of enumerating
the number of houses in the Borough for the purpose of ascertaining
the approximate population at that date was carried out, and it was
then estimated that the population was 121,428. This figure was
obtained by multiplying the number of inhabited houses by 5.75,
this being the average number of persons per occupied house at
1901 Census.
