OPEN SPACES, SWIMMING BATHS, &c.
East Ham has some five Parks and Pleasure Grounds
comprising 160 acres, used for Cricket, Football, Lawn Tennis,
and other sports, and are, in my opinion, an important factor in
East Ham's low death-rate.
The Council has also apportioned seven acres of land for
allotments which are much appreciated by the industrious workmen
of the Borough.
In the Central Park there is an open-air Swimming Bath, 90
feet long by 30 feet wide. It is fitted with all the accessories of a
first-class bath.
The water is supplied from the Water Board's mains, and
during the season it is re-charged at least twice weekly.
It is highly appreciated by the inhabitants, and the charges are
nominal—Adults, 1d.; children, ½d. School children under charge
of a master at prescribed times, free.
During the three seasons it has been open the bath was used
by 69,575 persons.
In 1902 17,797 persons.

„ 1904 32,906 „
ARTIZANS' DWELLINGS.
In order that the artizans and labourers of the Borough might
have a healthy and comfortable home, the District Council
inaugurated a scheme under the Housing of the Working Classes
Act to build some 350 tenement houses.
They are situated near the Docks and Gas Works, where they
can be of the greatest service to those for whom they are erected.
The accommodation is excellent, great care having been
exercised in planning the sanitary arrangements.
They are lighted by electricity, and there is a constant supply
of water.
