FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS.
Much of the time of the Department has been devoted to
systematic inspection of Factories and Workshops (particularly
the latter) during the year.
In cases where nuisances have been discovered, Notices were
served for their abatement, and in every instance complied with.
No difficulty has been experienced in enforcing the provisions
of the Factory and Workshops Act. There are 210 Factories and
Workshops on the Register.
OUTWORKERS.
In compliance with the provisions of Section 107 of the Factory
and Workshop Act, 1901, I have been officially informed of some
250 persons resident in the Borough receiving home work from
manufacturers carrying on business in this and other districts.
Upon receipt of the list they are thereupon visited for the
purpose of seeing that the premises are in a suitable sanitary
condition, and the strictest attention given to cleansing, overcrowding,
W.C. accommodation, etc., and immediate notification
given in the event of the occurrence of a case of infectious disease.
The Act provides that the above-mentioned list must be
forwarded twice yearly.
There are 472 Outworker's premises in the Borough.
