The total number of cases notified from Scarlet Fever was
593, which resulted in 10 deaths, as against 434 reported cases and
9 deaths for 1897. In order to meet the increasing wants of the
District, it became necessary to provide further accommodation for
this disease. The District Council, at their meeting held on 15th
November, sanctioned the use of a large building, known as Rancliffe
House, as a home to which the patients from the Fever
Hospital at Bonny Downs might be drafted upon convalescence.
Accommodation being provided for twenty-four patients.
I secured the services of a Matron and staff of three Nurses,
and am pleased to report that the addition has been of the greatest
benefit to the District.
I have visited the Schools during the year on several occasions,
and examined the children separately, and any child found
desquamating was sent home, with any others living in the same
house, and isolated.
