There were 219 cases of Diphtheria (including 7 cases of
Croup) notified, resulting in 23 deaths.
Fifteen of these deaths were under 5 years of age, and 8 over
5 years, as against 175 cases recorded for 1897, which resulted
in 31 deaths.
The arrangement is still continued with the West Ham Corporation
by which we are enabled to send cases of Diphtheria to
the Plaistow Infectious Diseases Hospital; 25 cases were admitted,
and 6 deaths occurred there.
Deaths occurred at the following places, and the added
particulars will show the condition of premises, drains, &c., at the
time of the visits of the Inspector of Nuisances.
1 st January.—St. Bernards Road; aged 2 years; drain
tested—no defects;, premises in fair condition. Died 7th
January.
4th January.—Temple Road; aged 5 years; drain tested—
no defects ; premises in fair condition. Died 5th January.
21 st January—Strone Road; aged 6 years; drain defective;
no cover to cistern. Died 26th January.
24th January—York Road; aged 4 years; drain being
reconstructed; premises in fair condition. Died 31st January.
15th February—Abbotts Park Road (Croup); aged 11
months; drain tested—no defects; premises in good condition.
Died 15 th February.
9th March—Park Terrace, North Woolwich; aged 4 years;
soil pan foul and broken; rooms in filthy condition; drain tested—
no defects. Died 9th March.
