MILK. From samples taken from a milk processing depot in your district, ten
proved to be slightly deficient in butter fat and solids-not-fat. There was no
evidence of added water, and the average butter fat and solids-not-fat content on
whole consignments proved to be satisfactory. Subsequent sampling disclosed improved
quality.
CAKES. A sample of "Jam and Cream Sponge' was procured and on analysis it was
found to contain imitation cream. Legal proceedings were instituted, and a fine of
£2 0s 0d on each of two summonses was imposed, together with costs of five guineas,
FISH. The examination of a purchase of three pieces of 'Smoked Haddock' showed
that one piece was in fact 'Whiting'. A caution was issued to the Manager of the
shop.
BREAD. A complaint was received from an Old People's Home that a loaf of
bread delivered to the Home had been pecked by birds. It was thought that the pecking
took place at the bakery and an official caution was issued
MERCHANDISE MARKS ACTS. 1887-1953. The majority of the inspectors' work
carried out under the provisions of the above Acts relate to ensuring that the requirements
of the various Marking Orders made under the provisions of the Act of 1926, and
which relate to the marking with an indication of origin of certain imported foodstuffs
when exposed for sale or sold, are complied with. Inspections were made at
338 different premises and 2,019 displays, consisting of meat apples, tomatoes,
poultry, butter, margarine, dried fruit, bacon salmon and lard were examined Any
infringements detected were of a minor nature and were dealt with by verbal warnings.
LABELLING OF FOOD ORDER, 1953. This Order requires pre packed food to be
marked with the name and address, or with the registered trade mark of the packer or
labeller, and also requires such food to be labelled with its common or usual name
(if any) and with the names of the ingredients of a compounded food. It also controls
the manner in which the presence of Vitamins and minerals is disclosed and
prescribes specific labelling on certain foods, A total of 1,080 articles of prepacked
food was examined at 216 premises to ascertain whether the above requirements
were complied with Corrective active taken for infringements in the whole area of
the County has equal effect within the Boroughs, and in instances where incorrect
labels were noted correction was obtained by representations to the packers or
manufacturers.
FALSE OR MISLEADING DESCRIPTIONS Food advertisements and labels have con
tinued to be scrutinised for false or misleading statements and descriptions Similarly
County wide correction has equal effect in all Boroughs and corrective action
was taken where a fruit content was suggested for sweets, oranges falsely described
as seedless, and cheese spread labelled as 'Cream Cheese8. Misleading labels
describing such articles as 'Butter Cream Fancies' and 'Creamed Rice' which contained
imitation cream were also corrected.
SPECIAL DESIGNATED MILK During 1960 my Council issued two Dealers (Pasteuriser's)
Licences in respect of premises within your area where milk is produced
Thirty-nine inspections were made to these premises and ninety six samples of
24
