SEWERAGE AND DRAINAGE WORKS.
The work of constructing new sewers, reconstructing old
ones, laying drainage connections, constructing flushing tanks
and gullies, and all other works in connection with the drainage
of the District is now carried out by the Board's own staff.
The following are the principal works executed during the
year:—
SURREY ROW.
A new 12-inch pipe sewer has been laid in Surrey Row at
the east end, commencing at the new flushing tank which was
constructed last year, and discharging into the large brick sewer
in Gravel Lane. Surrey Row has now a new sewer throughout
its whole length. The sewer discharges in two directions, viz.,
into Blackfriars Road main sewer and Gravel Lane. A flushing
tank with a capacity of tons of water is constructed at the
highest point of the sewer, from which a 15-inch pipe runs in a
westerly direction and 12-inch pipe eastwards. All the houses
in this thoroughfare are now disconnected from the old defective
Boundary sewer, which runs in the rear of the premises on the
South side, and we have arranged with the adjoining Parish of
St. George-the-Martyr to abolish the sewer, and are now waiting
until they are ready.
RED CROSS STREET.
A new side entrance to the main sewer in this street has been
constructed near its junction with Southwark Street. This side
entrance now permits this sewer being cleansed in the section
between Union Street and Southwark Street, the large quantity
of boiling water, steam, &c., in this sewer renders it necessary
to have manholes at short distances apart in order that the
men working in the sewer may have a ready means of escape in
case of need. We have also constructed a new manhole in the
same section of sewer near the junction with Union Street.
UNDERGROUND CONVENIENCE.
In October last I was instructed by the Sewers and Sanitary
Committee to prepare plans and estimates for the construction
of an Underground Convenience at the junction of the Borough
High Street and Southwark Street, which plans were adopted
by the Board, and the work of removing the old chålet was
commenced in November, a hoarding 12 feet in height was
erected and let for advertising purposes, and the new structure
was started upon. An unusual depth was excavated before a
suitable foundation was found. The accommodation provided is
for both, men and women—in the case of the former 12 W.C.'s,
