In November last application was made to the Board by the
workmen of this Department for an increase of wages. The
Special Committee to whom this was referred recommended the
Board to advance the rate of wages as under:—
Per day.
Carmen, Dustmen 4s. 2d. to 4,s. 6d.
Sweepers, Gullymen, Market
Sweepers and others 4s. 0d. to 4s. 6d.
The recommendation was adopted by the Board, the first
payment of the additional amount being made on December 9th,
1893. The additional amount on the wages in consequence of
this increase, for the remainder of the year, was about £95.
The new asphalte streets in the District are a, great improvement
so far as the cleansing work is concerned, they are more
easily swept and flushed, and can be kept in far better condition
than either pitching, macadam, or wood paving, especially so in
the narrow courts and passages where cleanliness is so essential.
