MORTUARY.
For a considerable time past, the Board has been in treaty
with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for a site for the erection
of a Mortuary, the London County Council being of opinion that
the existing one, situate in Ewer Street, Gravel Lane, is
inadequate for the purpose. The proposed site is situate on
the north side of Lavington Street; it has an area of 3,260
superficial feet, and the price is £1,335.
PUBLIC CONVENIENCES.
In September, 1893, Mr. Newton called the attention of
the Board to the desirability of constructing an underground
public convenience in lieu of the then existing one at the
Borough end of Southwark Street, and moved that specifications
and estimates be prepared without delay in order that the work
might be carried out during the slack time of the year, and
thereby afford beneficial employment during the winter for the
working classes. The motion was seconded by Mr. Fry and
carried unanimously. The matter was referred to the Sanitary
and Sewers Committee, with authority to carry out the work in
accordance with plans prepared by Mr. Norrish, the Surveyor of
the Board, at an estimated cost of £2,300. The work was
commenced in November last and is now approaching completion.
A loan of £2000 was, after a considerable lapse of time,
occasioned by delay on the part of the Local Government Board
in sanctioning the loan, obtained of the London County Council
towards the cost, repayable by equal instalments of principal
and interest in 30 years; the rate of interest charged being 3½
per cent. per annum.
RAGLAN MUSIC HALL.
In September, 1893, Mr. Grattan called attention to the
fact of notice having been given by the proprietor of premises
situate in Union Street, Borough, known as the "Raglan Music
Hall," of application for a license to use the premises for music
and dancing, and moved that a petition be presented to the
Licensing Committee of the London County Council against
the same. The motion was carried and a petition presented
accordingly. The case was heard by the Licensing Committee
on the 12th October, and the license refused.
WORKMEN'S DWELLINGS.
In October and November, vacancies in the Special Committee
on the subject of Workmen's Dwellings, occasioned by
the death of Mr. James Meikle and the retirement of Mr. R. H.
Blatchford, were filled by the appointment of Mr. A. H. Nicholl
