SURVEYORS REPORT.
For the year endituj Lady Day, 1893.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my tenth Annual
Report on the works executed and other matters in connection
with the Department under my control. All paving works are
now carried out by men directly employed by the Board, and not
under the contract system, with the exception of Asphalte
Paving which is done under contract. The direct employment
of labour in this work has proved very satisfactory and we have
a good staff of able workmen.
A large amount of additional work and responsibility has
been cast upon the Department under my control during the
past year. In the first place the Board undertook the difficult
work of cleansing the Boro' Market and placed the matter under
my direction and control ; it was necessary for this to organize
a proper staff and arrange for the disposal of the refuse
collected, also to provide for the Hushing of the Market, &c. &c.
In addition to this work, the daily cleansing of the footways
and the wood paved carriageways was ordered to be carried
out, also under my direction, for which vans and other
necessary plant had to be purchased, a special street foreman
was appointed whoso sole duties were to superintend the Boro'
Market and footway cleansing. These works were found
necessary to be taken together, by the same men, thus minimising
the cost, the result of which compared very favourably
indeed with the estimates submitted to you prior to the
commencement of the work.
The following list shows the quarterly totals of the weight ol
Market and other Refuse collected and carted to the shoot at the
Strand Board of Works Depot, Shot Tower Wharf, Commercial
Road. Lambeth.
