Copies of the above resolution were forwarded to the
Charity Commissioners, to the Members representing South
London in Parliament, and to the several Vestries and
District Boards of South London, and elicited none but
favourable replies. Subsequently, in answer to a deputation
who waited upon them, the Commissioners expressed their
approval of the project generally, and their willingness to
contribute a sum equal in amount to any which might be
raised by voluntary subscription, limiting, however, the amount
to £150,000. A Committee has been formed and active steps
are now being taken to promote the object in view.
Margarine
The Margarine Act (50 & 51 Vict.) came into force on the
1st January, and the duty of administering it rests with the
Vestries and District Boards, so far as the Metropolis is
concerned. Under this Act, all substances prepared in imitation
of butter are required to be marked "Margarine," in
capital letters, not less than three-quarters of an inch square,

other name is forbidden. The officer appointed under the
Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1875, is empowered to take
samples without going through the form of purchase. Any
articles purporting to be butter, and not marked margarine,
are to be presumed to be exposed for sale as butter. Any one
convicted is liable to a penalty of £20 for the first offence,
£50 for the second, and, for subsequent offences, a maximum
penalty of £100 is imposed. Section 9 requires that every
manufactory of margarine shall be registered with the local
authority in manner prescribed by the Local Government
Board, who have issued an Order upon the subject, dated the
22nd Dec., 1887, a copy of which may be seen on application.
This Board, being the local authority for the St. Saviour's
District, has given notice that it is prepared to register any
manufactories of margarine there may be in the district, in
accordance with the provisions of the Act and the Order
of the Local Government Board
Contracts.
Fresh Contracts have been entered into for Sewer and
Drainage work, and for Pavior and Masons' work, a list of
