streets along Bankside, &c.; which, on more than one occasion,
have proved efficacious in keeping out the tide.
A parliamentary plan and notices were deposited in November
last by the South Eastern Railway Company for the stopping up
of parts of Ewer Street, in the Parish of St. Saviour, and for
other purposes, it being the object of the Company to acquire the
site of Ewer Street, and surrounding property for the purpose of
establishing a goods station; and, on the Bill being lodged, this Board
caused a petition to be presented against the same. Subsequently
negotiations were entered into, and it was arranged that this Board
should withdraw its opposition, the Company undertaking to widen
part of Gravel Lane on the east side, and to form a new thoroughfare,
forty feet wide, between the southern portion of Ewer Street
and Southwark Street (now connected only by a narrow passage
or alley), so as to form a direct communication for carriage and
other traffic between Union Street and Southwark Street vid the
Grove.

Extension
Much inconvenience having been felt in consequence of there
being no adequate accommodation available for the purposes of a
Mortuary, this Board, after various attempts to procure other sites
in the neighbourhood, determined upon the adaptation and fitting
up of one of the arches of the South Eastern Railway at the
Stoneyard in Ewer Street; and the Board has much satisfaction
in stating that a place in every way suitable for the purpose has
been thus provided at a cost of about £250; and that arrangements
have been made with the Company for a lease of the
premises, constituting the Mortuary and Stoneyard, for 21 years, at
a rental of £100 per annum.

A parliamentary plan and notices were deposited by the Corporation
of London in November last for the widening of London
Bridge ; and this Board, in reply to inquiries by the Metropolitan
Board of Works, approved of the project generally, but expressed
a hope that the method proposed to be adopted for widening the
bridge might not be detrimental to its architectural appearance or
its stability; and suggested the desirability of means being taken
simultaneously with the proposed widening for enlarging also the
approaches on the city side. The Bill has, however, been lately
withdrawn for the present session by its promoters.
