During the year the following lamps have been cut off:—
1 in Hemmings Row.
2 in Salisbury Street.
2 in Ivy Bridge Lane.
1 in Taylor's Buildings.
Two lamps have also been temporarily removed in Neal Street,
one consequent upon the rebuilding of No. 106 Long Acre, and one
originally fixed to No. 10 Neal Street, destroyed by the recent fire.
The refuge lamps in Charing Cross and Whitehall, together with
the guard posts, have been thoroughly overhauled and repainted of
a dark green colour, the old drab paint which had accumulated to a
thickness of one-eighth of an inch having previously been entirely
removed.
The four gas meters which were fixed to lamps in Long Acre,
St. Martin's Place, Burleigh Street, and the Haymarket, have been
removed, they having become useless owing to the boxes having
been full of water for some time.
The following lamps have been set back to avoid contact with
vehicular traffic, or the position has been slightly altered in
connection with the street paving works:—
2 in Charing Cross.
2 in Pall Mall East.
3 in Long Acre.
2 in Adelaide Street.
1 in James Street, Ilaymarket (bracket shortened).
The cost of lighting, cleansing, and maintaining is as follows:—
£ s. d.
Gas Light and Coke Company—Gas 2,483 18 3
Repairs to lanterns and painting 18 18 5
Alterations in the position of lamps 7 17 10
£2,510 14 6
The lamps in the parish are generally in an unsatisfactory
condition as to their general appearance and want of uniformity,
but 1 hope shortly to bring up a special report for your consideration,
dealing with the whole question.
