mation at a subsequent meeting it was opposed, and the
resolution for confirmation was lost by nine votes to eight.
Consequently the matter dropped and the Vestry are now
exactly in the same position as heretofore.
ASSESSMENT OF PROPERTY.
It will be remembered that in the last Annual Report
the question of the assessment to be placed upon the undertaking
of the St. James's and Pall Mall Electric Light
Company was referred to, the differences which had arisen
between the Vestry and the Company being amicably
settled by an arrangement by which the assessment of
£14,609 gross, £9,609 rateable, inserted in a Provisional
List in May, 1894, was allowed to remain in force without
appeal, the Company reserving to themselves certain rights
when their property came to be inserted in the Quinquennial
Valuation List, deposited in May, 1895. In preparing
the Quinquennial Valuation List the Vestry fixed
the assessment of the Company at the same value as that
placed in the Provisional List of 1894, namely £14,609
gross, £9,609 rateable. The Company gave notice, in order
to obtain a locus standi, of their intention to appeal against
this assessment on the ground that it was excessive. As a
result, however, of interviews between the Vestry Clerk
and the Company's valuer the objection to the new Valuation
List was withdrawn and the whole question of the
previous dispute settled, on the understanding that the new
valuation would not be disturbed during the Quinquennial
period, unless circumstances which could not then be
foreseen should arise.
QUINQUENNIAL RE-VALUATION.
The work connected with the Quinquennial Re-valuation
of property in the Parish was carried out by the Vestry as
