Of the 12 samples of Butter, 1 was found to contain
90 per cent. of Margarine; the vendor of this butter was
prosecuted and fined; the 11 other samples were pure
butters.
Of the 4 samples of Cocoa, 2 contained respectively 50
per cent. and 40 per cent of potato starch. The first of
these samples was labelled “Sold as a Mixture," and was
therefore unassailable; the vendor of the second sample
was warned. The 2 other samples were genuine.
The 3 samples of Arrowroot were genuine.
The sample of Claret, labelled “Grand Vin Margaux,”
was found to be very acid and to contain some deposit, but
no evidence of adulteration was discovered.
No money or consideration, other than the stipend
paid by the Vestry, has been received by me in connection
with these analyses.
I have the honour to remain,
Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
JAMES EDMUNDS.
