Against, the above deaths, as affecting the true mortality
of St. James's, should be set the deaths of strangers
who die in hotels and lodging-houses— many of whom have
come to London for medical advice and treatment. A very
large number of such hotels and lodging-houses exist in St.
James's, but the precise number of the deaths among such
visitors is not known. Such deaths, occurring in the
district and known to be of persons not belonging to St.
James's, have been brought into account in the summary
at page 198.
