Sanitary Department.—The engagement of Mr. A. F.
Lawrence, Assistant Inspector of Nuisances, was terminated
in April, and in the following month Mr. J. R. Campbell was
appointed to fill the vacancy caused thereby, at a salary of
£90 per annum.
Stoneyard.—The salary of the Stoneyard Clerk has been
increased from £100 to £120 per annum.
Bate Collectors.—A vacancy was caused by the death
of Mr. J. J. Johnson, Rate Collector in the Great Marlborough
Ward, on the 4th February, and his son, who had
latterly assisted him, was appointed to complete the collection
of the then current rates.
A list of the Officers of the Vestry and their respective
salaries is given on page 143.
FINANCIAL.
It will be seen on reference to the Accounts commencing on
page 136, that the year commenced with a balance in the
Treasurer's hands amounting to £8,136 7s. 5d. The sum
of £63,234 11s. 11d. was received during the twelve months,
and the expenditure for the same period reached a total of
£58,293 7s. 0d., leaving a balance of £13,077 12s. 4d.
on the 25th March, 1890.
Against this cash balance, however, there were, on the last
mentioned date, debts and liabilities properly chargeable to
income amounting to £11,005 11s. 4d., with assets (exclusive
of cash balance) estimated to realise £ 1,289 16s. 1d., leaving
a surplus of £3,361 17s. 1d., to be carried to the credit of
the present year.
LOANS.

page 146.
