A rate of 1d. in the pound produces nearly £3,000, so that
a general increase in the light of the street lamps to the
extent of about 60 per cent. has been effected at a cost to the
ratepayers of less than half a farthing in the pound. Compared,
indeed, with 1882, the annual cost of street lighting
shows no perceptible increase, although in the meantime 10
additional refuge lamps have been erected, and, as stated
above, the light in the ordinary street lamps has been
increased by 60 per cent. This result is due to three
causes, viz. (1) a re-arrangement of the hours of lighting;
(2) a reduction of the consumption of gas in the refuge
lamps at midnight from 20 feet to 5 feet per hour; and (3) a
considerable reduction in the price of gas. Considering the
generally insufficient lighting of the Parish until recently,
