on the present occasion as the mortality for the year
1868 is as low as in any year since I have held the
post of Medical Officer of Health in St. James s,
Westminster. The number of deaths reported as
having occurred in the Parish is 684. The following
The following table shows the deaths in every year

Now, although there are two years, 1856 and
1858, when the mortality was apparently less than
1868, there is a deduction to be made on the
mortality of 1868 which brings down the deaths to
669. This deduction is necessary on account of
the deaths returned from the Workhouse, and which
appear in my tables, including the deaths of fifteen
persons who have died there and who had been
brought from the neighbouring Parish of St. Anne,
Soho. This has arisen from the Union of St. Anne's
and other parishes with St. James, Westminster, for
carrying out the objects of the Poor Law, and which
have thus far disturbed my calculations with regard
to the mortality of St. James, Westminster.
