“ each case that recovers, it would represent a sum
“ of no less than ,£2,500,000. Disease and Death
“ are the most costly luxuries in which a nation
“ can indulge.“ A quarter of this sum spent in
the proper payment of Vaccinators, would have been
more than enough to have prevented every case of
Small Pox, which has made up this enormous
amount of disease and death.
Typhoid or Drain Fever.
On the 25th of November, I reported that whilst
in the whole the death-rate of the last fortnight had
been satisfactory, three fatal cases of Zymotic
disease had occurred, and one of these was Typhoid
Fever. This case occurred in Wellington Mews,
and several members of the same family were
attacked but recovered. On this occasion I reported
as follows:—
“ This disease, which is also known by the name
“ of Drain Fever, is the result of defective drainage,
“ but when once acquired it may be conveyed to
“ houses properly drained. We are always exposed
“ to the importation of this frightful disease from
“ undrained to well-drained houses. Although so
“ much has been done for the drainage of the
“ houses of the poor, the more opulent and well-to“
do inhabitants of the cities are strangely negligent

The following table gives a summary of the principal forms of Zymotic Diseases which have produced death in the Parish during the last 12 years.
