our previous position, that the whole excess of death
in 1864 was in adult life, we have to turn to the
remaining diseases of the chest, and here we find
that an increase of the number of fatal cases
ascribed to disease of the heart will make up for the
deficiency thus produced.

There were 18 more cases of death from this
cause in 1864 than in 1862.

The next inquiry I have made was into the
occupation of these who were attacked by this
excess of mortality, and first I proceeded to get the
sex of these who had died of diseases of the chest,
and of the 157 persons who died at over five years
of age, I found that 57 were males, and that 94
were females. It might have happened that this
death was only that of old persons, between sixty
