CIVIL CONDITION OF THE INHABITANTS.
The following table gives the proportion of
married and unmarried of males and females, of
persons aged fifteen years and upwards, in the
Parish of St. James's, Westminster:—

From this table it will be seen that the proportion
of females above fifteen exceeds the number of
males by the large number of 1887, or nearly onethirteenth
of the whole population. Of this number
954 are single women, 49 are married women, and
984 are widows.
OCCUPATION OF MALES AGED TWENTY
YEARS AND UPWARDS.
In estimating the causes of disease and death in
any particular district, it is a matter of importance
to know accurately the occupation of the inhabitants,
as it is by this means alone that the influence of
occupation, independent of other causes, can be
estimated. I have therefore thought it would be
of considerable interest to extract from the Census
of 1861 that part which relates to the occupations
