To the Chairman and Vestry of St. James's,
Westminster.
Vestry Hall, Piccadilly,
25th June, 1863.
Reverend Sir, My Lords, and Gentlemen,
At the expiration of another twelvemonth
I have the honor to present a short Statement
of the principal Works that have been executed
in my department. They do not apparently
form a very long list, but that is owing principally
to the extreme care evinced by the Committee of
Works in not sanctioning the execution of any
Works that were not clearly necessary.
The Paving Works have been almost exclusively
confined to repairs, of which a great number have
been executed, in addition to making the Roadways
safe after the incessant disturbances by the Gas and
Water Companies, and other causes. This last
item alone is almost sufficient work for the Vestry
to undertake and properly execute, as my Fortnightly
Returns will show. The few Special Works executed
in the Paving Department were considered as
necessary Works by the Committee, after mature
deliberation.
