The comparatively satisfactory condition of the
various sewers in the parish generally has obviated
the necessity for any specially New Works. The
principal Works that have been executed have
consisted of cleansing those we have, as accumulations
of various substances will occasionally occur in
the small sewers to which we have no access, such
as those in front of the houses in Regent Street.
This matter is under consideration, and probably
before the next twelvemonth has expired the Yestry
will be in possession of sufficient information to
guide them as to the advisability of making the
necessary outlay to prevent the recurrence of these
stoppages, or to decide as to whether the present
arrangements are the best. An attempt is also
being made to produce a satisfactory scheme for
reducing the number of the gullies in Regent
Street—with what success remains to be seen. It will
probably resolve itself into a question of Finance.
The question of Public Conveniences has
occupied, and still does occupy, the attention of the
Works Committee and the Vestry; but the question
of convenient sites still appears to be insurmountable.
One at the Pall Mall end of King's Place has been
removed, and I feel bound to state that in my opinion
there are only two courses open to the Vestry: one
is to purchase or rent the back premises of some of
the houses in the leading thoroughfares for the
purpose; or to conceal them by sinking them below
the surface of the Roadways. It is true that the
