The repairs to the macadam carriageways during the year have
been kept as low as possible, it being the intention in this district to
do away with macadam as a carriageway material, and substituting
either asphalte or granite sett paving, according to the circumstances
of the case. Macadam, although recognised as a good and ready
material for some situations, is most unsuitable for a district which
is so completely built up as is this district. The Committee have
already given orders in several cases for macadam roads and courts
to be asphalted or paved, and the works are now in hand.
The following is a list of the macadam streets which have been

During the previous year a loan was obtained from the London
County Council for re-asphalting a number of the public footpaths.
I he works were then put in hand, and continued during the early
part of this year, the following streets being dealt with:—Old Kent
Road, Westminster Bridge Road, Blackfriars Road, St. George's Road,
Little Suffolk Street, Mason Street and Townsend Street. After
several of these works had been completed, the County of London
and Brush Provincial Electric Lighting Co., commenced the work of
laying then mains in the parish, which necessitated their opening the
footpaths, after that no further work was carried out in the streets
