Death Rate.
The Death Rate per thousand per annum is 24.5. This high death rate, which has
been more or less general throughout the country, is accounted for by the five distinct epidemics
that have prevailed—two of influenza, one of small-pox, and those of diphtheria and scarlet
fever. The two latter have, to a certain degree, prevailed through the entire year.
Uncertified Deaths.
Seventeen deaths are uncertified. Four were of adults and thirteen of infants. On all
these cases the Coroner stated that, in has opinion, the inquest was not necessary. In
1892 nineteen deaths were not certified. In 1891 fifteen.
Inquests.
Sixty-one inquests have been held. Verdicts were:—
Jan. 17th.—Four. Suicide by cutting thr:at with razor; Injuries to head; Bronchitis,
accelerated by exposure to cold ; Bronchitis and Diarrhœa.
Feb. 7th.—Three. Pneumonia; Shock from Scalds ; Heart Disease.
„ 21st.—None.
March 7th.—One. Rupture of blood vessel on brain.
„ 21st.—None.
April 4th.—Two. Drowned in Docks; Drowned in Thames.
„ 18th.—Two. Suicide, shot in head; accidentally suffocated in bed.
May 2nd.—Two. Hæmorrhagic Apoplexy; Meningitis.
„ 16th.—Three. Found drowned in Thames; Meningitis; Fatty degeneration of Heart.
June 6th—Three. Two from Fatty degeneration of Heart due to alcoholism; Vavular
disease of Heart.
„ 20th.—None.
July 4th.—One. Inflammation of brain from falling off a fence.
18th.—One. Acute congestion of Lungs due to alcoholism.
