Lighting.
During the past year 5 additional gas lamps have been provided and fixed, viz., one 011
the bridge over the East London Railway, Deptford Lower-road, two in the Plough-road
(the lamps in this road have been re-arranged), one in Prospect-place, at the entrance to
Truman's-square, and one in Rotherhithe-street, at Mr. G. Hallett's premises, making the
total number of lamps lighted by the Surrey Consumers Gas Company, 370 (for particulars
of Contract see page 8).
Cleansing, Watering, &c.
The Contract with Mr. Joseph Parsons continues for the supply of men, horses, and
carts, at per day for man, horse, and cart for the cartage of the sweepings from the main roads
(after the same have been swept by the labourers employed by the Vestry), to a shoot
provided by the Vestry.
Mr. Alfred Thomas Hobman also contracts for removing the cleansings from the streets,
other than the main roads, for the general cartage of materials, also for the supply of horses,
harness, and drivers to the Vestry's water carts.
The well and pump for watering the roads, formerly situate opposite the "Plough P.H."
having been broken up and removed for the execution of the main sewers works, a new well
in lieu thereof has been constructed, and the pump refixed on the east side of the Plough-road,
at the expense of Mr. Nicholson, the Sewers Contractor.
Dusting.
Mr. Joseph Parsons again obtained the Contract for removing the dust, ashes, &c., from
the dwellings of the inhabitants, and out of the parish (for particulars of Contract see
page 8).
Removal of Nuisances, Sanitary Measures, &c.
During the past year 250 notices have been served in duplicate, under the "Nuisances
Removal Act," upon complaints made by the Medical Officer of Health and Inspector of
Nuisances, 222 of which nuisances have been abated by removal of the cause of complaint, 14
by the provision of proper drainage from the houses into covered sewers, in 11 cases the
necessary work is in progress, and in 3 it is standing over.
Hanover Street.
In consequence of the filthy and dilapidated state of thirty of the houses in Hanover-street,
proceedings under the "Nuisances Removal Act" were taken against the owner at the
Greenwich Police Court, and at the request of the Vestry, one of the magistrates of that
Court (J. H. Patteson, Esq.,) attended and viewed the property, after which, he made order
upon the owner for the cleansing and repair of the said houses, and the same have since bee
put into a better sanitary condition, the drainage of several of the houses has also been
improved, and an extra length of drain and two gulleys have been provided by the Vestry to
take the surface water from the street.
Fever, Prevention of.
A communication having been received from Dr. Simon, Medical Officer of the Privy
Council, with reference to the prevalence of Scarlatina and Fever in the Metropolis, the
