England and Wales the deaths corresponded to an
annual rate of 4.27 per 1,000 persons living, the
average annual rate in the ten preceding third quarters
having been 2.80.
Small-pox caused 1 death in Paddington, which
occurred in St. John's Sub-district. 9 cases—5 in St.
Mary's and 4 in St. John's Sub-district—were notified
during the quarter to the Sanitary Department, and
were removed to Hospital.
In London there were 49 deaths, equivalent to an
annual rate of 0.05 per 1,000 inhabitants.
Measles caused 18 deaths, as compared with 16 in
the corresponding quarter of last year. All occurred
in St, Mary's Sub-district, and were equivalent to an
annual rate of 0.59 per 1,000 inhabitants.
In London there were 459 deaths, equivalent to
an annual death rate of 0.43 per 1,000 inhabitants.
Scarlet Fever caused 5 deaths, as compared with
4 in the corresponding quarter of last year. 266 cases
223 in St. Mary's and 43 in St. John's Sub-district—
were notified during the quarter to the Sanitary
Department. 157 of these cases—131 from St. Mary's
and 26 from St. John's—were removed to Hospital,
the remainder—92 in St. Mary's and 17 in St. John's
—being treated at home.
In London there were 458 deaths, equivalent to
an annual death-rate of 0.43 per 1,000 inhabitants.
