Of the 509 deaths, 162 were of infants under 1
year of age, 220 of children under 5 years, and 90 of
persons aged 65 years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was
216 deaths to 1,000 registered births, as compared
with 189 in the corresponding quarter of last year.
In London it was 208, as compared with 171 last
year. In the thirty-three largest provincial towns it
ranged from 154 in Bristol to 476 in Preston. In
sixty-seven other large town districts the infant
mortality averaged 245 per 1,000 births, ranging from
140 in Devonport to 405 in Grimsby.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted
43.2 per cent. of the total deaths. 104 of
