of deaths during the corresponding quarter of last year
was 6. 66 cases—51 in St. Mary's and 15 in St.
John's Sub-district—were notified during the quarter
to the Sanitary Department, as compared with 32 in
the corresponding quarter of last year. These 66
cases do not include 4 cases of Membranous Croup.
37 cases—26 from St. Mary's and 11 from St. John's
Sub-district —were removed to Hospital, the remainder
—25 in St. Mary's and 4 in St. John's—being treated
at home.
All the houses in which Diphtheria occurred were
carefully inspected, not omitting the cisterns, and the
house-drains where necessary were tested with water.
Details of the sanitary condition of the houses in which
the 13 deaths occurred are shown as under:—
Chippenham Road.—Ground opened. Drain defective.
Joints open. Bell traps. No intercepting
syphon W.C. on first floor and in yard, "wash-outs"
with water-waste preventers. Separate water supply.
Blomfield Road.—Ground opened. Drain defective.
Joints open. No intercepting syphon. Soil.
pipe inside premises and not ventilated. Waste pipe
from sink in W.C. on first floor apparently connected
with D trap in closet or soil-pipe. W.C. on first floor,
a pan closet. W.C. in front area, a "wash-out" with
water-waste preventer. Separate water supply.
Craven Hill Gardens.—Ground opened. Drain
defective. Joints open. Bell trap. No intercepting
