The Comparative Statement of the number of persons using the Baths and Washhouses during the past five

years is as follows :—

The increase in the receipts has enabled the Commissioners
to meet the additional expenditure incurred for
electric lighting and steam heating apparatus, the object
of the latter being to reduce the working expenses. They
have also been enabled to commence an important improvement
in the drying closets of the Laundry Department
by heating the same with steam pipes in lieu of the old
furnaces, which they hope may also effect a saving in fuel
and labour.
The
Building.
The alterations to the furnaces noted above has
obviated the necessity of extensive repairs, which would
have had to be done had the newer system not been
adopted, so that the extra cost of this improvement is
minimized to that extent.
Electric
Lighting.
The Commissioners, as foreshadowed in last year's
Report, considered that it would be a great advantage to
have the Large Hall and Entrances lighted by means of
Electricity. They accordingly invited Tenders for carrying
out the work from several well-known Firms, finally accepting
the Tender of Messrs. Dawson and Hammond,
