BOROUGH OF PADDINGTON.
seems to be getting from bad to worse. As to the
possibility of gaining any pecuniary profit from ashes
and breeze in future, I think this must be abandoned,
and the difficulty and cost of disposal will inevitably
be increased year by year. Looking back for the past
twelve years it is now apparent that the only plan to
overcome the difficulty is by the use of destructors,
their adoption in many parts of the Kingdom, and
within the Metropolitan area, goes to prove that sooner
or later this system of disposal must become almost
universal.
In the collection of the rough dust during the year
the men were employed 309 days, 5,429 horses and
vans being engaged in the work; 25,666 loads were
collected, giving a daily average of 83.06 loads, or
4.91 loads per horse per day, the maximum loads
collected in one week being 736, and the minimum
357; the cost of collecting being £1,936 2s. 7d., and
of sifting £1,729 17s. 8d.
From the before-mentioned loads of dust the following
miscellaneous materials were abstracted, viz.:—
16,490 chaldrons of ashes and 9,389 chaldrons of
breeze, 240 boat loads or 4,798 tons of soft core, 248
cart loads and 17 boat loads, or about 800 tons of old
broken crockery and pickings, 22 tons of coals, 61 tons
13 cwt. of bones, 100 tons of rags, 55 tons 6 cwt. of old
cast and wrought iron, 4 tons 6 cwt. of various metals,
