REPORT, 1892-93.
For cost of working Lavatories, see Surveyor's
Report pages (75 and 76).
For several years the question of the necessity
of providing Lavatory Accommodation near
the Lock Bridge, has been discussed, but in
spite of the Yestry's efforts in the matter, nothing
was done until this year. Negotiations were entered
into for the purchase of a freehold house at the
North-west end of Clarendon Street, but the price
asked for the property was so exorbitant that the
Yestry decided to adopt a suggestion of the Surveyor,
viz.:—To construct an Underground Lavatory in
the centre of the roadway of such Street.
The Tender of Mr. Neave was accepted for the
work, and it is expected that the Lavatory will be
opened in July.
Of all modern improvements undertaken by
Local Authorities, there are none which can be said
to have contributed more largely to the health and
comfort of pedestrians than the construction of
Lavatory Accommodation for both sexes, such as is
now being carried out in the Metropolis.
The opposition which a few years ago was sufficient
to crush any effort of the kind, has now entirely
broken down, owing no doubt to the fact that the
conveniences in question are placed underground.
