convened, in order that steps might be taken for
keeping the Regent's and Grand Junction Canals in
a proper sanitary condition.
The waterway extending from Maiden Lane
Bridge, in St. Paneras, to Kensal Road, in Paddington,
was traversed by means of a Steam Launch,
and a close inspection made of the various basins,
together with the locks and drains in connection
therewith. At certain points samples of the Canal
water were taken.
The report prepared and issued to the members
of the authorities represented, concluded with the
following recommendations:—
Recommendations.
(1) We are of opinion that the three Vestries of
St. Marylebone, St. Paneras, and Paddington should
each in their respective districts take proper
measures to prevent objectionable solid or liquid
substances from fouling the Canal, and to prohibit
the discharge into the Canal of all drains and
drainage other than unpolluted surface water. There
seems to be ample powers for this action, and the
120th Section of the Public Health (London) Act,
also provides against nuisances, wholly or partially
caused by the acts or defaults of two or more
persons, even should the act or default of any one
of such persons not in itself be a nuisance.
(2) With regard to the Zoological Gardens,
seeing that, at present, there is no public Sewer
