or on an average of 10.73 hours per night. The actual
consumption of gas per lamp per annum has been
18,107 cubic feet. A meter is attached to one lamp
in twenty, which gives about 98 meters, the average
of their monthly readings are taken as the consumption
of each ordinary lamp. The Gas Light and Coke
Company are paid for the gas supplied on this basis,
at 2s. 2d. per 1,000 cubic feet.
The lamp service pipes up to the foot of the lamp
column are maintained by the Gas Company, and
during the year notices were sent them of 190 defective
services, which they attended to at once.
Refuge Lamps.—The position, power, and number
of these lamps will be found in the accompanying
return. See appendix sheet L.
Damages to Lamp-posts.—During the year ten
lamp-posts were knocked down, 23 columns broken,
26 head-irons and 24 lanterns broken and damaged
by various parties through carelessness or accidents.
Electric Lighting.
In August, 1890, the Metropolitan Electric Supply
Company, Limited, obtained an Act of Parliament to
confirm certain Provisional Orders made by the Board
of Trade, under the Electric Lighting Acts 1882 and
1888, relating to Paddington; and on the 1st of
December they commenced laying 3" and 5" cast-iron
mains under the public footways, for the purpose of
