38 BOROUGH OF PADDINGTON.
1,716 loads of road slop have been taken from the
catchpits of street gulleys, which would otherwise
have been washed into the sewers and caused accumulations
detrimental to the free flow of the ordinary
sewage matter.
Underground Convenience & Lavatory.
The above building has been constructed at the
South-east corner of Paddington Green, for the
accommodation of the general public. The entrance
to the Convenience is by means of a stone staircase
abutting on the Harrow Road and enclosed with iron
railings, and the accommodation provided consists of
a range of five urinals, fitted with flushing rim white
glazed ware basins, together with two automatic
intermittent syphon flushing cisterns; three water
closets fitted with patent pedestal closets, having
balance mahogany seats and paper boxes. The closets
are flushed with water by means of vacuum water
waste preventors. There is an Attendant's room and
lavatory.
The whole of the walls of the staircase, areas, and
interior of Convenience are lined with the best white
glazed bricks, the floors laid with chocolate and black
octagonal metallic tiles, and the roof over urinal range
covered with Hay ward's patent lights, with ventilating
louvres round same. The whole of the woodwork of
doors, fanlights, and windows, are of the best pitch
pine, varnished. The ventilation to closets is by
means of windows and fanlights hung on pivots.
