17,897, but the actual consumption has been 17,633
cubic feet. There are 97 meters attached to the lamps.
Refuge Lamps.—The number, position, and power
of these lamps will be found stated in the accompanying
returns. [Appendix II.] During the year three
additional lamps have been erected.
Price of Gas.—The Gas Company reduced the
price of gas supplied to the public lamps, on the 1st
of January last, from 2s. 5d. to 2s. 2d. per 1,000 cubic
feet.
Defective Services. — During the year 159 notices
were sent to the Gas Company for the rectification of
defective services, these were promptly attended to by
them, they having to maintain the service pipes to the
base of the lamp-posts.
Damages to Lamp-posts, &c - During the year
nine lamp-posts were knocked down, twenty lamp
columns broken, sixteen head irons,and twelve lanterns
damaged by various parties through carelessness or
accidents, the restoration being made good by the
Vestry's own workmen, in twelve cases at the expense
of those causing the damage, and in sixteen cases they
escaped detection.
