These 18 deaths—11 of parishioners from St. Mary's Subdistrict,
and 7 of parishioners from St. John's—are included in
the total deaths (458), and throughout this report are dealt with
in the same manner as if they had actually occurred in the
parish.

Of the 458 deaths, 95 were of Infants under 1 year of age,
172 of children under 5 years, and 105 of persons aged 65
years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was 138
deaths to 1,000 registered births. In London it was 144;
in the twenty-seven largest provincial towns it averaged 173,
ranging from 129 in Birkenhead to 237 in Preston. Of 50
other provincial towns, the highest rate was reached by
Newport (Mon.), where it was 248 per 1,000 births.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted 37.6
per cent. of the total deaths: 61 were due to one or other of
the seven principal zymotic diseases, of which 50 occurred in
St. Mary's and 11 in St. John's Sub-district.
