The death-rate in London last year, 19.7 per 1,000
inhabitants, was the lowest on record, the two next
lowest being those recorded in the years 1883 and
1884, when the death-rates were 20.5 and 20.4
respectively. This low death-rate is in part attributable
to a contemporaneous low birth-rate, the lowest
on record since 1850. Obviously the general deathrate
in every community is affected by the infantile
death-rate.
The death-rate in each one of the five groups of
districts into which London is divided is shown as
under:—
West Districts 17.7 per 1,000.
North „ 18.5 „
South „ 18.8 „
East „ 22.1 „
Central „ 25.5 „
The subjoined figures showing the number of deaths from all causes in Paddington during each of the last nine years, may be more intelligible to some than if expressed in the form of a death-rate:—
