Tipping Vans.—During the year, six new tipping
vans were purchased for maintenance of working
plant, in place of old slop carts worn out.
The under-mentioned works, &c., have been
executed by the Vestry's own staff of artizans at
the Works Department, viz.:—
Carta and Water Vans.—All the requisite repairs.
Harness.—The making new sets and general
repairs.
Smiths and Farrier's Work.—For this Department
all the sundry ironwork for repairs to carts,
water vans, machinery, buildings, shoeing, and
general smithing work.
For the Highway Department, 597 pickaxes,
lined and steeled, 17,014 pickaxes, 161 chisels, 12
paving hammers, 115 crowbars sharpened, 15 paving
hammers lined, and sundry miscellaneous repairs of
articles and tools.
Street Cleansing.—As described in previous
Reports, this work is carried out by gangs of men,
and, whenever practicable, by the use of the horse
scraping and sweeping machines. At certain periods
it is found necessary to saturate the surface of the
wood paving with water in order to thoroughly
cleanse it.
