134 of children under 5 years, and 78 of persons aged 65
years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was 135
deaths to 1,000 registered births. In London it was 165; in
the 27 largest provincial towns it averaged 210, ranging from
122 in Derby to 317 in Leicester. Of 50 other provincial
towns, the highest rate was reached by Yarmouth, where it
was 297 per 1,000 registered births.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted
40 per cent. of the total deaths; 43 were due to one or
other of the seven principal zymotic diseases. Of those 43
fatal cases, 36 occurred in St. Mary's, and only 7 in St. John's
sub-district.
