The diarrhœa cases are always high in the Summer quarters.
64 out of 70 deaths were in young children, and more than half
of these were registered as suffering from tabes, marasmus,
atrophy, convulsions, in fact mal-nutrition generally, indicative
of feeble health from other grave maladies, which sooner or
later would have proved fatal; the diarrhoea was simply a concommitant
symptom with other diseases. In 30 cases where the
duration of the diarrhoea is stated, the average period is 10 days,
ending generally with exhaustion.
Out of 47 deaths in the Zymotic class, there was no smallpox;
25 were from measles, scarlet fever, and whooping cough
together; 9 were cases of fever, including typhoid; 3 of blood
poisoning (a term getting into more general use), and 13 are
recorded under erysipelas, pyaemia, &c. (a real blood poisoning).
In fact, these fever and pyæmia cases should be better defined
as to their origin and known causes. Consumption and its
allied diseases are as usual very high, 89 or 19.2 per cent. of
deaths from all fatal causes.
Out of the 27 deaths from violence, 16, or more than half
are from street accidents and railway traffic. There are 4 cases
of infanticide, one of suicide by pistol-shot.
The public health was upon the whole very satisfactory last
quarter.
