is thus from this source a large addition every
year general to the population.

In April 1861 the Census of the population for
Paddington was 75,807; in April 1866 the Metropolitan
Board of Works estimated it at 93,305, or
increasing at the rate of 3511 per annum; under
the supposition that the rate of increase has not
abated, we find the population now stands at
100,587. On this basis I have calculated for my
report. The number of new houses built every year
rather increases than otherwise, but demolitions
of old houses in Praed Street, and other places in
the line of the Metropolitan Railway, will about
compensate for the increase of new house-building.
The majority of new houses have in them more
than one family; thus Amberly Road averages
15.2 persons; Netley Street 18.5 in each house.
