new road from Market Hill, Shadwell, to the Bridge over the
new entrance to the London Docks, to divert the proposed road from
Lower Shadwell, north of the Company's Engine House, to pull down
cortain houses in Labour-in-vain Street and Lower Shadwell, and set
back the fronts thereof, to widen and improve the street, and to alter
the levels of Market Hill, in lieu of forming the proposed road through
Fox's Lane. The Company has also agreed to pay the expenses of
paving, lighting, and draining tho same. The new roads will be more
convenient to the public as regards facility of access to the High Street
and Lowcr Shadwell than the old one through Fox's Lane, and will be
greatly improved with regard to the levels. The new road will form
the commencement for an improved communication between the
important waterside and other premises in Shadwell and Wapping and
the Commercial and Mile End Roads, to which at present there is no
direct route.
The houses and premises, No. 115, Wapping Street, and Nos. 22,
23, 24 and 25 Red Lion Street, Wapping, have been purchased for the
purpose of widening and improving Wapping Street. An arrangement
has been concluded with the owners of premises No. 2l£ Red Lion
Street, for the purpose of setting back the line of frontage of the said
premises. A negotiation is pending for the purchase of the leaseholders'
interest in No. 115, Wapping. The Metropolitan Board of Works has
agreed to contribute one-third of tho cost of widening Wapping Street,
at the corner of Red Lion Street.
A piece of ground at the corner of Drill Place and East Church
Row, Limehouse, has been purchased for the purpose of widening and
improving the thoroughfare. The fence round the same has been
altered and set back, and the remaining portion of the ground sold by
tender.
