Shortly after the passing of the Act the Board received
from the Commissioners appointed under it a letter requesting
a Return of the population, area, rateable value, and
other particulars of the parishes in the District, and the
Commissioners stated that they would be glad to receive any
representations which the Board might desire to make as to
any minor alterations of boundaries which they might
consider desirable for simplification or convenience of administration.
The information asked for was furnished, and the question
with reference to the boundaries was referred to the
Works and General Purposes Committee, and the Board were
subsequently represented at the Inquiries which were held.
The Board received a further letter from the Commissioners,
26th Feb., stating that they proposed the number of
Councillors for the Borough should be 42, and referring to
the number of Councillors for the Wards, but this matter
was more particularly dealt with by the Vestry of the Parish
of Lewisham.
The drafts of the various schemes prepared by the Commissioners
under the Act have received the consideration of
the Board, and representations with reference thereto were
made by the Board to the Commissioners. All these schemes
have now been confirmed by Order in Council, and the same
form separate and lengthy documents and are all open to
inspection at the Board's Offices.
The Act will come into operation on 1st November next,
when the powers and duties of the Board will determine,
except so far as they may remain in office as a representative
body for the purpose of making arrangements as to their
properties and liabilities and the transfer of the same to the
New Council.
